  15. West and the environment including the 1949 novel Shane, the
  16. basis for the 1953 Alan Ladd film; in Santa Fe. Schaefer had
  17. never been west of Cleveland, his hometown, when he wrote
  18. Shane, which was honored by the Western Writers of America in
  19. 1985 as the best western novel.
